As an Employer, I am sure
that you are aware that on 1st October 2004 the final
part of the Disability Discrimination Act came into effect.
These new measures ensure that all people have fair and
equal access to all services. Some examples could be
ramps or lifts to allow access for wheelchair users or
the less mobile, Braille or audio documentation for people
who are visually impaired, or the presence of a sign
language interpreter for people who use sign language
as their 1st language.
There are 9 million D/deaf and Hard of Hearing people
in the UK, with distinct differences in the way that
they wish to communicate. It is worth noting that approx
80,000 people use sign language as their 1st language.
All business’ should consider the implications
and value of training and investing in their staff as
part of the recommended “reasonable adjustments” that
are required to be made. Communication between Hearing & Deaf people is not
always straightforward. Quite often the response of a
hearing person is to either talk more loudly or over
emphasise lip pattern, which, in fact, causes more difficulty.
However, the ability & awareness of how to communicate “clearly” can
solve many day to day issues and stop feelings panic,
or of embarrassment for both parties concerned. How CHIIC can support you We are qualified trainers, assessor & consultant,
