Are you an Individual wishing to obtain more knowledge or information about sign language training courses, or do you wish to know more about the Deaf Community and its Culture? If so, there is sure to be something suitable for you in our range of courses below. If you have any questions please contact us, we will be happy to deal with all queries

You will find details below of a wide range of coursessuitable for all levels, including courses for students with no prior knowledge through to students with good signing skills.

All courses are limited; therefore booking in advance is essential for all courses. Private tuition can also be arranged.

There are no concessions on these courses, however, an instalment plans are available at no extra cost, and can be agreed on an individual basis.

Deaf & Deafblind Awareness

6@ 1/2 day sessions £265

This D/deaf & DeafBlind Awareness course is designed to enable participants to be more effective in communication when coming into contact with deaf people through both their work and social lives. They will be taught coping strategies, as well as being given an understanding of why different people have different communication needs.
A short Signature written examination is at the end of this course and is included in the cost.

BSL Level 1 Course - £325 per person (incl exam fee)

25th January 2012: 4pm – 7.30pm(approx): 10 sessions

 

No previous knowledge is required for this course, as this is the first level of sign language, and, on completion, will allow the student to conduct a basic conversation with a Deaf person. A limited number of students will be accepted onto the course to allow quality tutoring to all students. The Signature BSL Level 1 has 3 assessments and is included in the cost. Students are requested to bring proof of any D/deaf, DeafBlind or Disability courses they have attended. Homework will be issued to reinforce learning in the "non-contact" hours. On completion, the student will be able to carry on to the Level 2 in Sign Language.

BSL Level 2 Course

Tuesday 17th January 2012: £525: 4.00pm - 8.00pm:15 Sessions

 

Students must have completed the Signature BSL Level 1 certificate to enrol on this class, and ideally participated in the "Preparation for BSL Level 2" class. Homework exercises will be given to do out of the classroom environment. Structured 1 to 1 tutorials will be given during the course, to identify strengths & weaknesses in order to encourage improvement. Students will be encouraged to sign at all times, including coffee/tea breaks, as total immersion in the language will improve language development. A limited number of students will be accepted onto the course to allow quality tutoring to all students. The Signature BSL Level 2 has 3 assessments throughout the course, and is included in the cost. Students are requested to bring proof of their v BSL level 1 certificate, and any other certificates relating to D/deaf, DeafBlind or Disability courses they have attended. Candidates that do not meet the full criteria will be offered "Mini Sessions" to enable them to meet the standard required to undertake the course. These sessions can be prior to or during the actual course

Level 3 Language Development Course

Friday 23rd March 2012: Cost £595: 10 sessions: 9.30am – 4.30pm:

 

This course has been designed for Students who will have completed the Signature Level 2 course. There is a huge gap between Level 2 & Level 3 in BSL and therefore a short course to bridge that gap has been created to give the student confidence to move on to the next level. You will reinforce your existing knowledge, broaden your vocabulary on a range of topics and develop the sustainability of your signing, plus re-enforce the Grammatical Features and BSL structure that is required at the next level. If you are unsure as to whether you should apply to join this course or apply directly for the Level 3, then, contact us for an interview when we will be happy to advise you on the best route.

NVQ Level 3 Certificate in BSL10th March 2012: Cost £1450:

Fortnightly Saturdays 9.30am - 4.30pm: 18 sessions:

 

Students must have completed the Signature BSL Level 2 certificate to enrol on this class, and ideally participated in the "Preparation for BSL Level 3" class. Or have used BSL on a regular basis. Homework exercises will be given to do out of the classroom environment. This will include: Researching topics, signing practice, watching video clips to improve receptive skills etc...  Course length is 18 days, this includes: training, practice sessions on a 1-1 basis, and time built into the course to allow filming of evidence material required for your portfolio, also visits from people in the Deaf community to support your filming of evidence is included in the cost. You will receive the support of 2 tutors, there will be structured 1 to 1 tutorials given during the course, to identify strengths & weaknesses in order to encourage improvement. You will develop your skills on how to sustain signing at Level 3 for a given period of time to the standard required for this level. Students will be encouraged to sign at all times, including lunch & coffee/tea breaks, as total immersion in the language will improve language development. There will also be optional arranged visits by us as part of the development of your portfolio. These organised external activities will need to be paid for separately; again this will support your development in signing & receptive skills. A limited number of students will be accepted onto the course to allow quality 1-1 tutoring sessions to all students. Your work will be constantly assessed, and a portfolio constructed. When completed, the portfolio is assessed and then moderated by Signature to ensure that you have reached the required standard before the certificate can be achieved, this fee is included in the cost. You will require access to a video camera, recording media and tripod which is used constantly throughout the course. Students are requested to bring to their interview, proof of their Signature BSL level 2 certificate; and any other certificates relating to D/deaf, DeafBlind or Disability courses they have attended.

Pre-Level 6 Language Development Course: Cost £700:

The new Level 6 NVQ has now replaced the NVQ4.  Whilst the contents of the units remain the same, the learning outcomes and assessment criteria have changed to match the new UK Occupations Language Standards (2010).

There are no levels 4 – 5.  This is to make it clear that the Level 6 NVQ in BSL is equivalent to a BA Honours degree.

 

Students must have completed the Signature BSL Level 3 certificate or NVQ Level 3 to enrol on this class, and ideally (although not essential) have used BSL on a regular basis. Homework exercises will be given to do out of the classroom environment. This will include: Researching topics, signing practice, watching video clips to improve receptive skills etc...

  • Working towards NVQ Level 6 Language Development Training, practice sessions on a 1-1 basis.
  • There will be structured 1 to 1 tutorials given during the course, to identify strengths & weaknesses in order to encourage improvement.
  • Organised external activities (paid for separately) to participate in to again develop signing & receptive skills. You will develop your skills on how to sustain signing at Level 6 for a given period of time to the standard required for this level.
  • Students will be encouraged to sign at all times, including lunch & coffee/tea breaks, as total immersion in the language will improve language development.
  • A limited number of students will be accepted onto the course to allow quality 1-1 tutoring sessions to all students. Your work will be constantly assessed.
  • When completed, your skills will be assessed as to whether you are ready to progress to the NVQ level 6.

 

***However, please note: participation in this course does not automatically get you onto the next level; you must achieve it on your production and receptive skills!!

You will require access to a video camera and tripod which is used constantly throughout the course.

Students are requested to bring to their interview, proof of their Signature BSL level 3 certificate or NVQ Level 3 certificate and any other certificates relating to D/deaf, DeafBlind or Disability courses they have attended.

NVQ Level 6 Certificate in BSL: Cost £1800: 6th February 2012:

Mondays : 9.30am-4.30pm: 10 Sessions

 

 

Students must have completed the Signature BSL Level 3 certificate or NVQ Level 3 to enrol on this class, and ideally have used BSL on a regular basis, or attended a NVQ Level 6 Language Development course.

Homework exercises will be given to do out of the classroom environment. This will include: Researching topics, signing practice, watching video clips to improve receptive skills etc...

  • Time built into the course to allow filming of some evidence material required for your portfolio
  • There will be structured 1 to 1 tutorials given during the course, to identify strengths & weaknesses in order to encourage improvement.
  • Organised external activities (paid for separately) to participate in to again develop signing & receptive skills.
  • You will develop your skills on how to sustain signing at Level 6 for a given period of time to the standard required for this level.
  • Students will be encouraged to sign at all times, including lunch & coffee/tea breaks, as total immersion in the language will improve language development.
  • A limited number of students will be accepted onto the course to allow quality 1-1 tutoring sessions to all students.
  • Your work will be constantly assessed, and a portfolio constructed. When completed, the portfolio is assessed and then moderated by an External Verifier from Signature to ensure that you have reached the required standard before the award can be achieved, this fee is included in the cost.
  • You will require access to a video camera and tripod which is used constantly throughout the course.
  • Students are requested to bring to their interview, proof of their Signature BSL level 3 certificate or NVQ Level 3 certificate and any other certificates relating to D/deaf, DeafBlind or Disability courses they have attended.

NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting

Cost £2800: Friday 9th March 2012

9.30am-4.30pm:

10 Sessions

 

This programme is specifically designed for JTI/TI interpreters that feel they have reached a level of skill, knowledge and experience where they are now ready to put themselves forward to become fully qualified through the NVQ assessment.

 

The programme comprises of Evidence collection advice, 1-1 tutor/assessor contact time and includes opportunities to practise skills and to collect some of the range of evidence required. There is also a generous allocation of assessment time, enabling participants to meet with their assessor at regular intervals.

 

The full NVQ6 Interpreting Award comprises four mandatory units, and one optional unit (from a choice of two), together these units demonstrate occupational competence to interpret in a range of work-related settings. Once all five interpreting units have been assessed as successfully completed, the interpreter will be eligible for both NRCPD MRSLI and ASLI Full Member status.

 

You are guided through each unit of the NVQ i.e.

  • Clear, detailed explanations of what the NVQ requires and how to build a portfolio
  • Guidance so that you know what information to include
  • Live observation with structured feedback
  • Feedback on your interpreting performance and strategies to develop your skills
  • External events arranged to allow students the opportunity for evidence collection, including filming with members of the Deaf community

 

Cost includes registration fees for all 5 units.

Portfolios will be Internally Verified periodically throughout the course

External Verification will take place approximately 6 weeks after the course ends.

Silent Weekend Courses

 

Total immersion in Sign Language in comfortable surroundings;

 

Individual feedback will be given on performance shown through the weekend and will include ideas and recommendations on how to improve weak areas, delivered either face-to-face or in written format.
